1. ምድርም ሁሉ በአንድ ቋንቋና በአንድ ንግግር ነበረች።
2. ከምሥራቅም ተነሥተው በሄዱ ጊዜ በሰናዖር ምድር አንድ ሜዳ አገኙ፤ በዚያም ተቀመጡ።
3. እርስ በርሳቸውም። ኑ፥ ጡብ እንሥራ፥ በእሳትም እንተኵሰው ተባባሉ። ጡቡም እንደ ድንጋይ ሆነላቸው፤ የምድርም ዝፋት እንደ ጭቃ ሆነችላቸው።
4. እንዲህም። ኑ ለእኛ ከተማና ራሱ ወደ ሰማይ የሚደርስ ግንብ እንሥራ፤ በምድር ላይ ሳንበተንም ስማችንን እናስጠራው አሉ።
5. እግዚአብሔርም የአዳም ልጆች የሠሩትን ከተማና ግንብ ለማየት ወረደ።
6. እግዚአብሔርም አለ። እነሆ፥ እነርሱ አንድ ወገን ናቸው፥ ለሁሉም አንድ ቋንቋ አላቸው፤ ይህንም ለማድረግ ጀመሩ፤ አሁንም ያሰቡትን ሁሉ ለመሥራት አይከለከሉም።
7. ኑ፥ እንውረድ፤ አንዱ የአንዱን ነገር እንዳይሰማው ቋንቋቸውን በዚያ እንደባልቀው።
8. እግዚአብሔርም ከዚያ በምድር ሁሉ ላይ በተናቸው፤ ከተማይቱንም መሥራት ተዉ።
9. ስለዚህም ስምዋ ባቢሎን ተባለ፥ እግዚአብሔር በዚያ የምድርን ቋንቋ ሁሉ ደባልቋልና፤ ከዚያም እግዚአብሔር በምድር ሁሉ ላይ እነርሱን በትኖአቸዋል።
10. የሴም ትውልድ ይህ ነው። ሴም የመቶ ዓመት ሰው ነበረ፥ አርፋክስድንም ከጥፋት ውኃ በኋላ በሁለተኛው ዓመት ወለደ።
11. ሴምም አርፋክስድን ከወለደ በኋላ አምስት መቶ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
12. አርፋክስድም መቶ ሠላሳ አምስት ዓመት ኖረ፥ ቃይንምንም ወለደ፤
13. አርፋክስድም ቃይንምን ከወለደ በኋላ አራት መቶ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም። ቃይንምም መቶ ሠላሳ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ሳላንም ወለደ፤ ቃይንምም ሳላን ከወለደ በኋላ ሶስት መቶ ሠላሳ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
14. ሳላም መቶ ሠላሳ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ዔቦርንም ወለደ፤
15. ሳላም ዔቦርን ከወለደ በኋላ ሦስት መቶ ሠላሳ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
16. ዔቦርም መቶ ሠላሳ አራት ዓመት ኖረ፥ ፋሌቅንም ወለደ፤
17. ዔቦርም ፋሌቅን ከወለደ በኋላ አራት መቶ ሠላሳ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
18. ፋሌቅም መቶ ሠላሳ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ራግውንም ወለደ፤
19. ራግውንም ከወለደ በኋላ ፋሌቅ ሁለት መቶ ዘጠኝ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
20. ራግውም መቶ ሠላሳ ሁለት ዓመት ኖረ፥ ሴሮሕንም ወለደ፤
21. ራግውም ሴሮሕን ከወለደ በኋላ ሁለት መቶ ሰባት ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
22. ሴሮሕም መቶ ሠላሳ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ናኮርንም ወለደ፤
23. ናኮርንም ከወለደ በኋላ ሴሮሕ ሁለት መቶ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
24. ናኮርም መቶ ዘጠኝ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ታራንም ወለደ፤
25. ታራንም ከወለደ በኋላ ናኮር መቶ ሃያ ዘጠኝ ዓመት ኖረ፥ ወንዶችንም ሴቶችንም ወለደ፤ ሞተም።
26. ታራም መቶ ዓመት ኖረ፥ አብራምንና ናኮርን ሐራንንም ወለደ።
27. የታራም ትውልድ እነሆ ይህ ነው። ታራ አብራምንና ናኮርን ሐራንንም ወለደ፤ ሐራንም ሎጥን ወለደ።
28. ሐራንም በተወለደበት አገር በከለዳውያን ዑር በአባቱ በታራ ፊት ሞተ።
29. አብራምና ናኮርም ሚስቶችን አገቡ፤ የአብራም ሚስት ስምዋ ሦራ ነው፤ የናኮር ሚስት የሐራን ልጅ ሚልካ ናት፤ ሐራንም የሚልካና የዮስካ አባት ነው።
30. ሦራም መካን ነበረች፤ ልጅ አልነበራትም።
31. ታራም ልጁን አብራምንና የልጅ ልጁን የሐራንን ልጅ ሎጥን የልጁንም የአብራምን ሚስት ምራቱን ሦራን ወሰደ፤ ከእርሱም ጋር ወደ ከነዓን ምድር ይሄዱ ዘንድ ከከለዳውያን ዑር ወጡ፤ ወደ ካራንም መጡ፥ ከዚያም ተቀመጡ።
32. የታራም ዕድሜ ሁለት መቶ አምስት ዓመት ሆነ፤ ታራም በካራን ሞተ።
1. በዚያን ጊዜ ሰዎች ሁሉ የሚናገሩትና የሚግባቡበት ቋንቋ አንድ ብቻ ነበር።
2. ሰዎቹም ምሥራቁን[49] ይዘው ሲጓዙ፣ በሰናዖር[50] አንድ ሜዳ አግኝተው በዚያ ሰፈሩ።
3. እነርሱም እርስ በርሳቸው፣ “ኑ፤ ጡብ እንሥራ፤ እስኪበቃውም በእሳት እንተኵሰው” ተባባሉ። በድንጋይ ፈንታ ጡብ፣ ለማያያዣም ቅጥራን ተጠቀሙ።
4. ከዚያም “ለስማችን መጠሪያ እንዲሆንና በምድር ላይ እንዳንበተን፣ ኑ፤ ከተማና ሰማይ የሚደርስ ግንብ ለራሳችን እንሥራ” አሉ።
5. እግዚአብሔር (ያህዌ) ግን ሰዎቹ ይሠሩ የነበሩትን ከተማና ግንብ ለማየት ወረደ።
6. እግዚአብሔርም (ያህዌ) እንዲህ እንደ አንድ ሕዝብ አንድ ቋንቋ በመናገር ይህን ማድረግ ከጀመሩ፣ ከእንግዲህ ያቀዱትን ሁሉ ማከናወን አያዳግታቸውም።
7. ኑ እንውረድ፤ እርስ በርሳቸውም እንዳይግባቡ ቋንቋቸውን እንደበላልቀው።”
8. ስለዚህ እግዚአብሔር (ያህዌ) በምድር ሁሉ ላይ በታተናቸው፤ ከተማዋንም መሥራት አቆሙ።
9. እግዚአብሔር (ያህዌ) በዚያ የመላውን ዓለም ቋንቋ ስለ ደበላለቀ የከተማዪቱ ስም ባቤል[51] ተባለ። ከዚያም እግዚአብሔር (ያህዌ) ሰዎቹን በምድር ሁሉ በተናቸው።
10. የሴም ትውልድ ይህ ነው፦ ሁለት ዓመት ከጥፋት ውሃ በኋላ ሴም በ100 ዓመቱ አርፋክስድን ወለደ።
11. ሴም፣ አርፋክስድን ከወለደ በኋላ 500 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶች ልጆችን ወለደ።
12. አርፋክስድ በ35 ዓመቱ ሳላን ወለደ፤
13. ሳላንን ከወለደ በኋላ አርፋክስድ 403 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶችን ወለደ።
14. ሳላ በ30 ዓመቱ ዔቦርን ወለደ፤
15. ዔቦርን ከወለደ በኋላ ሳላ 403 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶች ልጆችን ወለደ።
16. ዔቦር በ34 ዓመቱ ፋሌቅን ወለደ፤
17. ፋሌቅን ከወለደ በኋላ ዔቦር 430 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶች ልጆችን ወለደ።
18. ፋሌቅ በ30 ዓመቱ ራግውን ወለደ፤
19. ራግውንን ከወለደ በኋላ ፋሌቅ 209 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶች ልጆችን ወለደ።
20. ራግው በ32 ዓመቱ ሴሮሕን ወለደ፤
21. ሴሮሕን ከወለደ በኋላ ራግው 207 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶች ልጆችን ወለደ።
22. ሴሮሕ በ30 ዓመቱ ናኮርን ወለደ፤
23. ናኮርን ከወለደ በኋላ ሴሮሕ 200 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶች ልጆችን ወለደ።
24. ናኮር በ29 ዓመቱ ታራን ወለደ፤
25. ታራን ከወለደ በኋላ ናኮር 119 ዓመት ኖረ፤ ሌሎች ወንዶችና ሴቶች ልጆችን ወለደ።
26. ታራ 70 ዓመት ከሆነው በኋላ አብራምን፣ ናኮርንና ሐራንን ወለደ።
27. የታራ ትውልድ ይህ ነው፦ ታራ፣ አብራምን ናኮርንና ሐራንን ወለደ፤ ሐራንም ሎጥን ወለደ።
28. ሐራን፣ አባቱ ታራ ገና በሕይወት እንዳለ በከለዳውያን ምድር በምትገኘው በተወለደባት ከተማ በዑር ሞተ።
29. አብራምና ናኮር ሁለቱም ሚስት አገቡ፤ የአብራም ሚስት ሦራ ስትባል፣ የናኮር ሚስት ደግሞ ሚልካ ትባል ነበር፤ ሚልካም የሐራን ልጅ ናት፤ ሐራንም የሚልካና የዮስካ አባት ነበረ።
30. ሦራ መካን ነበረች፤ ልጅ አልነበራትም።
31. ታራ ልጁን አብራምን፣ ሐራን የወለደውን የልጅ ልጁን ሎጥን እንዲሁም የአብራምን ሚስት ምራቱን ሦራን ይዞ ወደ ከነዓን ለመሄድ በከለዳውያን ምድር ከምትገኘው ከዑር አብረው ወጡ፤ ነገር ግን ካራን በደረሱ ጊዜ በዚያ ተቀመጡ።
32. ታራ 205 ዓመት ኖሮ በካራን ሞተ።
1. Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.
2. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land [1†]of Shinar, and they dwelt there.
3. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.
4. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower [2†]whose top is in the heavens; let us make a [3†]name for ourselves, lest we [4†]be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5. [5†]But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
6. And the LORD said, “Indeed [6†]the people are one and they all have [7†]one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they [8†]propose to do will be withheld from them.
7. Come, [9†]let Us go down and there [10†]confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
8. So [11†]the LORD scattered them abroad from there [12†]over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
9. Therefore its name is called Babel, [13†]because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
10. [14†]This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.
11. After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
12. Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, [15†]and begot Salah.
13. After he begot Salah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
14. Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.
15. After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
16. [16†]Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot [17†]Peleg.
17. After he begot Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.
18. Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.
19. After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.
20. Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot [18†]Serug.
21. After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.
22. Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.
23. After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
24. Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot [19†]Terah.
25. After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.
26. Now Terah lived seventy years, and [20†]begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27. This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot [21†]Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot.
28. And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29. Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was [22†]Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, [23†]Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.
30. But [24†] Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31. And Terah [25†]took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from [26†]Ur of the Chaldeans to go to [27†]the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there.
32. So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.
1. ምድሪ ብዘላ ብሓደ ቓንቋን ብሓደ ንግግርን ነበረት።
2. ኮነ ድማ ፡ ንምብራቕ ኣቢሎም ምስ ተጓዕዙ፡ ኣብ ምድሪ ሲነኣር ጎልጎል ረኸቡ፡ ኣብኡ ድማ ተቐመጡ።
3. ንሓድሕዶም ድማ ክላግዳ፡ ጡብ ንስራሕ እሞ ብሓዊ ንድፈኖ፡ ተበሃሃሉ እሞ ጡብ ኣብ ክንዲ እምኒ፡ ጸብሪ ኽኣ ኣብ ክንዲ ኖራ ኾነሎም።
4. ሽዑ ድማ፡ ክላ ግዳ ኣብ ልዕሊ ገጽ ኩላ ምድሪ ምእንቲ ፋሕ ከይንብልሲ፡ ከተማን ርእሱ ሰማይ ዚጥንቁር ግምብን ንስራሕ፡ ስምና ኸኣ ነጸውዕ፡ በሉ።
5. እግዚኣብሄር ከኣ ነቲ ደቂ ሰብ ዚሰርሕዎ ዝነበሩ ኸተማን ግምብን ኪርኢ ወረደ።
6. እግዚኣብሄር ድማ ፡ ኣንሆ ኹላቶም ሓደ ዝዛረብኦም ሓደ ህዝቢ እዮም። መጀምርታ ግብሮም ከኣ እዚ እዩ። ሒጂ ድማ ኪገብርዎ ኢሎም ዝህቅንዎ ዘበለ ዚኽልክሎም የልቦን።
7. እምበኣር ማንም ንዘረባ ብጻዩ ምእንቲ ኸይሰምዕሲ ፡ ንዑ ንውረድ፡ ኣብኡ ኸኣ ዘረባኦም ንደባልቕ፡ በለ።
8. እግዚኣብሄር ድማ ካብኡ ናብ ልዕሊ ገጽ ኩላ ምድሪ ፋሕ ኣበሎም፡ ምስራሕ እታ ከተማ ኽኣ ገደፉ።
9. እግዚኣብሄር ኣብኣ ቛንቋ ኹላ ምድሪ ፋሕፋሕ ስለ ዘበለ፡ ስም እታ ኸተማ ባቤል ተባህለ። ካብኣ ኽኣ እግዚኣብሄር ናብ ልዕሊ ገጽ ኩላ ምድሪ በተኖም።
10. ወለዶ ሴም እዚ እዩ። ሴም ወዲ ሚእቲ ዓመት ኮነ፡ ክልተ ዓመት ድሕሪ ማይ ኣይሂ ኽኣ ንኣርፋክሳድ ወለደ።
11. ሴም ድማ ድሕርቲ ናኣርፋክሳድ ምስ ወለደ፡ ሓሙሽተ ሚእቲ ዓመት ገበረ፡ ኣወዳትን ኣዋልድን ከኣ ወለደ።
12. ኣርፋክሳድ ድማ ሰላሳን ሓሙሽተን ዓመት ገብረ፡ ንሸላሕ ከኣ ወለደ።
13. ኣርፋክሳድውን ንሸላሕ ምስ ወለደ፡ ድሕሪኡ ኣርባዕተ ሚእትን ሰለስተን ዓመት ገበረ ኣወዳትን ኣዋልድን ድማ ወለደ።
14. ሸላሕ ከኣ ሰላሳ ዓመት ገበረ፡ ንዔበር ወለደ።
15. ሸላሕ ንዔበር ምስ ወለደ ድማ፡ ድሕሪኡ ኣርባዕተ ሚእትን ስለስተን ዓመት ገብረ፡ ኣወዳትን ኣዋልድን ከኣ ወለደ።
16. ዔበር ድማ ሰላሳን ኣርባዕተን ዓመት ገበረ፡ ንፌሌግ ከኣ ወለደ።
17. ዔበር ንፌሌግ ምስ ወለደ ኽኣ፡ ድሕሪኡ ኣርባዕተ ሚእትን ሰላሳን ዓመት ገብረ፡ ኣወዳትን ኣዋልድን ድማ ወለደ።
18. ፌሌግ ከኣ ስለላሳ ዓመት ገብረ፡ ንረጉ ወለደ።
19. ፌሌግ ንረጉ ምስ ውለደ ድማ፡ ድሕሪኡ ክልተ ሚእትን ትሽዓተን ዓመት ገብረ፡ ኣወዳትን ኣውላድን ከኣ ወለደ።
20. ረጉ ድማ ሰላሳን ክልተን ዓመት ገብረ። ንሴሩግ ከኣ ወለደ።
21. ረጉ ንሴሩግ ምስ ወለደ ድማ፡ ድሕሪኡ ክልተ ሚእትን ሾብዓተን ዓመት ገበረ፡ ኣወዳትን ኣዋልድን ከኣ ወለደ።
22. ሴሩግ ድማ ሰላሳ ዓመት ገበረ፡ ንናሆር ከኣ ወለደ።
23. ሴሩግ ንናሆር ምስ ወለደ ኸኣ ድሕሪኡ ክልተ ሚእቲ ዓመት ገበረ ኣወዳትን ኣዋልድን ከኣ ውለደ።
24. ናሆር ድማ ዕስራን ትሽዓተን ዓመት ገብረ፡ ንታራ ኸኣ ወለደ።
25. ናሆር ንታራ ምስ ወለደ ድማ፡ ድሕሪኡ ሚእትን ዓሰርተው ትሽዓተን ዓመት ገበረ፡ ኣወዳትን ኣዋልድን ከኣ ወለደ።
26. ታራ ድማ ሰብዓ ዓመት ገበረ፡ ንኣብራምን ንናሆርን ንሃራን ወለደ።
27. ወለዶ ታራ ኽኣ እዚ እዩ፡ ታራ ንኣብራምን ንናሆርን ንሃራንን ወለደ። ሃራን ድማ ንሎጥ ወለደ።
28. ሃራን ከኣ ኣብ ኡር ናይ ከለዳውያን ኣብታ እተወልደላ ምድሪ ኣብ ቅድሚ ኣቡኡ ታራ ሞተ።
29. ኣብራምን ናሆርን ድማ ኣንስቲ ኣእተው። ስም ሰበይቲ ኣብራም ሳራይ እዩ። ስም ሰበይቲ ናሆር ድማ ሚልካ፡ ጓል ሃራን፡ ኣቦ ሚልካን ኣቦ ዮስካን እዩ።
30. ሳራይ ከኣ መኻን ነበረት እሞ ውሉድ ኣይነብራን።
31. ታራ ድማ ንኣብራም ወዱን፡ ንሎጥ ወራ ሃራን ወዲ ወዱን፡ ንሳራይ ከኣ ሰበይቲ ወዱ። ሰበይቲ ኣብራም ወዲ ወሰዱ፡ ካብ ኡር ናይ ከለዳውያን ናብ ምድሪ ከንኣን ኪኸዱ ብሓደ ወጹ። ናብ ካራን ድማ መጹ ኣብኡ ኸኣ ተቐመጡ።
32. ዕድመ ታራ ድማ ክልተ ሚእትን ሓሙሽተን ዓመት ኮነ። ታራ ኽኣ ኣብ ካራን ሞተ።
1. AND THE whole earth was of one language and of one accent and mode of expression.
2. And as they journeyed eastward, they found a plain (valley) in the land of Shinar, and they settled and dwelt there.
3. And they said one to another, Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly. So they had brick for stone, and slime (bitumen) for mortar.
4. And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower whose top reaches into the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the whole earth.
5. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
6. And the Lord said, Behold, they are one people and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.
7. Come, let Us go down and there confound (mix up, confuse) their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8. So the Lord scattered them abroad from that place upon the face of the whole earth, and they gave up building the city.
9. Therefore the name of it was called Babel--because there the Lord confounded the language of all the earth; and from that place the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
10. This is the history of the generations of Shem. Shem was 100 years old when he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.
11. And Shem lived after Arpachshad was born 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
12. When Arpachshad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.
13. Arpachshad lived after Shelah was born 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
14. When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.
15. Shelah lived after Eber was born 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
16. When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.
17. And Eber lived after Peleg was born 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
18. When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.
19. And Peleg lived after Reu was born 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
20. When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.
21. And Reu lived after Serug was born 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
22. When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.
23. And Serug lived after Nahor was born 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
24. When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.
25. And Nahor lived after Terah was born 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
26. After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of [at different times], Abram and Nahor and Haran, [his firstborn].
27. Now this is the history of the descendants of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot.
28. Haran died before his father Terah [died] in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.
29. And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and Iscah.
30. But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31. And Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife, and they went forth together to go from Ur of the Chaldees into the land of Canaan; but when they came to Haran, they settled there.
32. And Terah lived 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.
1. Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
2. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3. They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
5. But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
6. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
7. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
8. So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9. That is why it was called Babel -because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
10. This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.
11. And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
12. When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.
13. And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
14. When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.
15. And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
16. When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.
17. And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
18. When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.
19. And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
20. When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.
21. And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
22. When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.
23. And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
24. When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.
25. And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
26. After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27. This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.
28. While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth.
29. Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah.
30. Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.
31. Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.
32. Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
